Red Tart Cherry Picking
in July

Harvest Time is known for our Smoke House, Cider Barn, and Apple Barn but did you know that we also have Pick-Your-Own Red Tart Cherries in July? Red Tart Cherries (sometimes just called "sour cherries") are commonly used in baking for cherry pie and cherry cobbler, and for making cherry jam, cherry juice , cherry wine, and more!

Red Tart Cherry Picking 2010 Schedule

Picking Dates: July 3rd ONLY! 9 am to 4 pm
(while the crop lasts)

UPDATE

Crop Update (July 05, 2010):
Unfortunately, cherry picking has ended for 2010. The crop was just over 10% of a full crop. We hope that next year is much better!

Crop Update (June 14, 2010):
A pre-spring warm-up followed by a late April cold snap created frost damage to our tart cherry crop. We are currently estimating our tart cherry harvest at around 10 to 15% of a full crop. The crop damage stems from unseasonably warm temperatures in the early spring. That put fruit growth well ahead of its normal development schedule and made it more susceptible to spring frost. The tart cherry crop was 10 days to 2 weeks ahead of when it would normally bloom when the extreme cold termperatures hit.

Montmorency Tart Cherries:
The Healing Fruit

Information provided by:
Cherry Marketing Institute

  • According to ongoing research, daily consumption of Montmorency tart cherries has the potential to reduce the pain associated with arthritis and gout. To date, no other fruit or vegetable has been found to have the pain relieving properties of tart cherries.
  • There are 17 compounds in tart cherries with antioxidant properties, which, in total, may help fight cancer and heart disease.
  • Tart cherries contain melatonin, a powerful antioxidant that attacks free radicals and may help prevent or reduce brain deterioration associated with aging. Melatonin also is a known anti-inflammatory antioxidant. The combination of melatonin and the other antioxidants in tart cherries may be the secret of the natural pain relief of cherries.
  • Tart cherries contain anthocyanins and bioflavonoids, which may be 10 times stronger than aspirin in relieving pain.

Gout and Cherries

Gout is a form of arthritis that mostly affects men age 40 and older. Cherries may help relieve the pain of gout. Here's how it works:

  • Gout is associated with an abnormally high concentration of uric acid in the blood.
  • As uric acid concentrations increase, needle-like crystals of salt form. In time, these crystals accumulate and cause inflammation and pain.
  • Tart cherries contain compounds that may lower uric acid and thereby reduce inflammation.
